Die Tafel Österreich has been providing people affected by poverty in charities with rescued food free of charge since 1999. This means they have one essential worry less and can, with professional support, find ways out of hardship.
This model – which corresponds to the international food bank system – has been pursued by Austria’s oldest food bank since its foundation. What started in Vienna with four committed students and one private car has grown into a multi-professional organisation: today, we supply more than 85,000 people affected by poverty across Austria in around 170 charities (including mother-and-child homes, homeless shelters, women’s refuges, emergency accommodation and asylum centres, etc.) with over 1,500 tonnes of rescued food.
At the same time, the redistribution of food donations always goes hand in hand with raising awareness of how food poverty and food waste can be effectively tackled along the entire value chain. This includes initiatives ranging from campaigns promoting a better understanding of the best-before date, to the “Sensory Lab” for children and young people (how to use your senses to determine whether food is still good), and the travelling exhibition “GewissensBISS” (in cooperation with BOKU University Vienna) focusing on food waste.
Support our mission
Die Tafel Österreich is largely funded by donations and continues to rely heavily on volunteers. We depend on financial contributions, goods and time donations in order to continue bridging the gap between surplus and need in the future. We therefore appreciate every form of support.
